Vietnam, a new export market for Chilean apples and cherries

After some arduous trade and diplomatic negotiations, Chile has opened a new market in Asia for its apples and cherries. The Minister of Agriculture, Antonio Walker, stated that the Ministry of Agriculture, through the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG), had achieved an agreement on May 24 to export these fruits to Vietnam.

This agreement will allow Chilean apples to enter that destination starting this month and Chilean cherries starting August. It also guarantees that Vietnamese grapefruits and mangoes enter Chile during this year.

"We must continue opening new markets for Chilean producers. It is very important that we are not mono exporters and that we are increasingly more competitive in international markets. This is the result of many negotiations that we have carried out together with the private sector and Asoex, which allows us to continue increasing our presence in the world," he said.

The signing of these protocols should be finalized this month for apples and mangoes and in August for cherries and grapefruits. In addition, the SAG and the Plant Protection Department (PPD) of Vietnam will sign a cooperation agreement when the Minister of Agriculture of Vietnam visits Chile for the meeting of the APEC Ministers of Agriculture.
