Hass avocado prices have skyrocketed by 35% in the Mexican province of Michoacan, according to the National System of Information and Market Integration of the Ministry of Economy.
According to the economic report, in the last month prices increased by 35%, i.e. 13.63 pesos per kilo, between April 10 and May 12; however, if the current prices are compared with those of January, the increase is 60%.
Currently, a kilo of Hass avocados is quoted at around 53 pesos in wholesale market in the capital of Michoacan, but some supermarket chains sell it at an even higher price: Walmart sells it for 79 pesos and Chedraui for 88.50 pesos.
The last report of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader), corresponding to the month of March of this year, stated that Mexico produced 583,426 tons of avocado and that Michoacan was the leading producing region, with a harvest of 541,525 tons, i.e. 92.8% of the country's total production.
