The maradol papaya crop leads the national ranking with a production of 288,159 tons per year.
The fruit is obtained in six of the eight regions of Oaxaca, which produces more than states such as Colima, Chiapas, Veracruz, and Michoacan.
The state has 2,746 hectares devoted to this crop in the municipalities of Santiago Jamiltepec, Santa Catarina Juquila, Santa Maria Pochutla, Santo Domingo Tehuantepec, Juchitan de Zaragoza, Teotitlan de Flores Magon, San Juan Bautista Cuicatlan, San Juan Bautista Tuxtepec, San Carlos Yautepec, and Tlacolula de Matamoros, among others.
The coastal zones of Mexico are the main regions where papaya is planted; the entity has the geographical conditions that allow the optimal development of this product, such as: altitude, rainfall, a temperature of 21 to 33 degrees, and soils that have a medium and moderate depth.
At the end of the 2017 harvest, the state's agricultural production continued to rank within the first 10 places at the national level in volume and value. For example, it is the fourth biggest producer of coffee and sixth place in mango.
