Pineapple production in the sector of Atlantida will increase by 10% in 2019.
Entrepreneurs of the area stated that this year's goal was to increase production to generate jobs to contribute to the country's development.
They indicated that 90 percent of the fruit was exported to the United States and that the remaining 10 percent was sent to Europe.
The fruit is also processed in the country to produce concentrate.
Honduras cultivates four pineapple varieties: the azucaron variety, Smooth Cayenne, which is also known as the Hawaiian variety, the Champaka, and the MD2 variety, which is also known as the Yellow or Golden variety, according to experts in this production.
Pineapple is currently the second most cultivated tropical fruit in the world (approximately 20% of the commercial production of these products), just behind the banana.
In 2017, Central America pineapple exports amounted to 1.034 billion dollars, and 50% of exports went to the United States.
In 2018, exports grew by 18 percent. In the first quarter of the year the countries of the region pineapple exports amounted to 261 million dollars, i.e. 18% more than in the same period of 2017, to the US and the Netherlands.
