Colombia's honey gold pineapple will enter Peru

The Minister of Agriculture, Andres Valencia, announced that the Colombian honey gold pineapple variety had opened a new export door: Peru. According to Valencia, this new door was opened thanks to the government's health diplomacy and the management of the ICA to take advantage of these markets.

"Peru now joins other countries, such as Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Chile, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, the United States, Russia, Switzerland, Turkey, and the European Union, which already enjoy the quality and sweetness of the Colombian pineapple," Valencia said.

Last year Colombian honey gold pineapple exports amounted to US $ 9.2 million, a figure that is expected to increase with the maintenance of these markets and the arrival of the neighboring country as a new export destination.

"The opening of this market for the Colombian pineapple is a new achievement for the country and for our sector, which is in development and growth. We can arrive to Peru with a fresh pineapple that has a very good quality and presentation, and thus achieve a privileged position," noted Rodolfo Ahumada, the commercial manager of Pacific Fruits.

Currently, there are pineapple producing farms, which are registered with the ICA, in the departments of Antioquia, Bolivar, Caldas, Casanare, Cauca, Cesar, Cordoba, Cundinamarca, Meta, Norte de Santander, Quindío, Risaralda, Santander, and Valle del Cauca. According to official data, there are 2,511 hectares devoted to this crop, distributed in 82 properties.

"We achieved this important admissibility of our products by applying the appropriate management, monitoring, pest reduction, land registration, harvesting, and post-harvest measures, as well as phytosanitary export certificate, among other things, to guarantee the quality and safety of the pineapple that will be exported to Peru and that 15 countries of the world already enjoy," said Deyanira Barrero Leon, the general manager of the ICA.

According to this organization, exporting companies must register in the Health Information System for Import and Export of Agricultural and Livestock Products, Sispap.
