The season of regional organic goji berries is currently underway. Grower Klaus Umbach from Heilbronn and his Bio-Goji colleagues have cultivated several hectares of "Turgidus" organic goji in the last three years and are now committed to harvesting. Their product is marketed nationwide in 30g cups with 6 cups per box, mainly via the OGV in Bruchsal, and organic wholesaler Weiling.
'Turgidus'-variety
The variety "Turgidus" is the sweetest and earliest goji berry, can be kept for well over week and the plants are free of mildew and therefore particularly well suited for regional organic cultivation. "Turgidus" growers in Switzerland, South Tyrol and those from the first set-ups in France are successfully harvesting as well. The medicinal effects of goji berries is described by Dr. Lacour in a lecture on the effects of regular goji berry consumption. Trial deliveries or a subscription system with regular delivery of fresh berries by post is possible via the webshop of the Umbach nursery during the entire harvest season, from July to October.
Increasing acreage
Domestic organic cultivation of goji berries is becoming increasingly important every year, says Umbach. In September, he will provide around 100,000 plants for plantation cultivation. In addition, the 'Goji Pioneer' also deals with support and advice on an individual level. ''My 'Turgidus' has proven very successful in European cultivation, in various places. For 8 years I have been building the most diverse varieties on 1 ha of land, but only the Turgidus is marketable."
