Portuguese melons and watermelons available from end of June
The agricultural enterprise Frutadivina was developed some seven years ago in Odemira, a fertile region in the south of Portugal.
Frutadivina is owned and operated by a professional Dutch grower, with a proud track record in agriculture. The operation was initially started up to supply top quality berries to a specialist marketing company in Europe. To this day, this exclusive contract has been maintained with mutual satisfaction.
Whilst the original berry production was started up on 15 hectares, today the farm stretches over a magnificent 125 hectares. Nursery, production, packing, logistics and administration activities are all performed on this location.
With more than sufficient land available, Frutadivina in recent years also started up trials to produce melons and watermelons. The climate, sufficient water, outstanding technical knowledge and the positive trial results have resulted in a joint project with Cool Fresh International to grow, harvest and market these products from mid June to the end of September. The initial project of 25 hectares will produce a solid volume of top quality products, produced according to strict Global Gap requirements.
All melons and watermelons will be packed and marketed in the Bon Divina brand. The brand was developed with the typical look and feel of Portugal, and the playful use of colours and traditional elements create a strong brand identity.
The main melon varieties (Canteloupe, Honeydew, Galia) are currently in production, as well as the Trix Paula watermelon, a plant known for its sweet taste and small edible seeds. Last but not least, the Petite Perfection mini seedless watermelon is expected to perform well. Cool Fresh International expects to start harvesting around 28 June 2018.
