According to these statistics, there are currently 3,900 local fruit farmers with an total area of some 15,700 hectares. The number of farms that cultivate apples, pears, apricots and/or peaches has been declining since the late 1990s, while the acreage remains stable. Almost two thirds of the fruit trees are located in Styria.
Austria remains an import country
For other vegetable products, Austria's self-sufficiency level is significantly higher. For example, potatoes are produced 87 percent domestically and vegetables 58 percent.
