P.A.S.A.M. Agrumi counterbalanced lower lemon volumes by getting new partners

In order to provide our readers with constant feedback on the production and commercial dynamics of the global citrus fruit market, we have been auditing leading Sicilian agricultural businesses. We have therefore gone back to Syracuse to monitor the citrus fruit campaign.

"This year, the lemon harvesting season started with a few difficulties. The year was dry and the high temperatures led to drops during setting, thus slowing down fruit growth. Luckily, we managed to obtain excellent quality fruit," explains Salvatore Magliocco, vice-president of Soc. Coop. P.A.S.A.M. Agrumi di Siracusa.

"We counterbalanced the lack of volumes by increasing the number of our associates and therefore collecting more lemons."

According to the Sicilian manager, demand for organic lemons is increasing especially abroad, while Italy still struggles to fall in line with central/northern Europe.

"We are recognised as packagers of limone di Siracusa IGP, which is very important to us for food security and as regards respect for consumers, as PGI fruits come exclusively from the Syracuse area, are of the Femminello siracusano variety and are cultivated following a strict production specification."
