Papaya salmonella outbreak expands to Louisiana

19 states across the United States have confirmed cases of salmonella from papayas and Louisiana is one of them, with two cases. Texas has seven confirmed cases.

“Once it is in our food, it is really hard to kill or remove these organisms from our food,” said Adhikari.

The Center of Disease Control is asking consumers and restaurants to avoid papayas from Carica de Campeche, a farm in Mexico.

The Southside Produce Market employees in Baton Rouge said their papayas and other produce are well monitored.

“We’ve been monitoring this situation very closely and just making sure that all of our papayas are very safe for our customers to consume,” Hayden Pizzolato, an employee from store.
