Eurotunnel sees exports grow with record 141k lorries

Railway firm Eurotunnel boasted its best ever truck traffic last month. The channel tunnel operator said its Le Shuttle Freight transported 141,646 lorries in May, a 3 per cent increase compared to the year before and the best results in its history.

The firm also broke a daily record on June 8, with 3,822 trucks transported in 24 hours in the Calais-Folkestone direction, beating its previous record of 3,633 lorries which it set in December 2015.

However, passenger traffic fell 4 per cent to 212,930 vehicles in May, compared with 221,618 the year before, which the firm blamed on people staying away due to the French election.

Eurotunnel added that truck shuttle traffic has fallen by 1 per cent since January due to hail and snowstorms in Spain at the beginning of the year which led to a fall in exported vegetables.
