Colombian Hass avocados have gained the favour of the government of the president of the United States, Donald Trump, and successfully completed the process of entry into that market.
During his visit to the United States, President Juan Manuel Santos announced that the Hass avocados produced in Colombia would be allowed to be sold in the North American market.
At the end of last year, the US Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) established the conditions for the import of Colombian avocados.
Avocados are one of Mexico's flagship products. Only in January, it was reported that their export had increased by 24.4 percent compared to the same period of the previous year, with the US territory being their main destination.
"This is a product with a lot of potential, because the demand is still greater than the supply. It is great news for all Colombian producers and traders, because the potential of Colombian avocados in this market is huge," said the president after a meeting with the Vice president of the United States, Mike Pence, in Washington.
The main exporters of this product within Colombia are Antioquia, Santander, Valle del Cauca, Cundinamarca, Caldas and Risaralda.
"We already have a clear agenda with specific points to address together and monitor constantly, so that relations between the two countries can be strengthened," stressed the Colombian head of Trade, Industry and Tourism after meeting with the Secretary of Commerce of the United States, Wilbur Ross.
