Exported 567 tonnes of squash

NZ: Eastland Port sets new April export tonnage record

Eastland Port had a record start to its financial year, with a higher volume of export cargo handled than in any other April on record. This is on the back of a record tonnage for 2016.

Last month more than 223,690 tonnes of logs was exported, along with 755 pallets of kiwifruit and 567 tonnes of squash. The log throughput involved 11 ships and was 38 percent ahead of what was expected.

Port general manager Andrew Gaddum said forestry’s strong prices drove the record volume of wood across the wharf.

“Timber is a prime source of construction material worldwide and demand is unyielding at the moment, so we are seeing the local response to that in our monthly load out volumes.”

Mr Gaddum said the strong start to this financial year was a reminder why the port has embarked on its twin berth development programme announced this week.

“We encourage debate on the twin berth development plans and again ask the public to let the port know what their thoughts are.”
