ZIPAR calls for fund to help Zambian suppliers improve quality

The Zambia Institute for Policy Analysis and Research (ZIPAR) has called on the government to establish a supplier development fund as a means of empowering local suppliers. The fund is aimed at helping suppliers improve the quality of their products, potential production capacity and reduce input costs.

“The fund will provide a route to market for local products of good quality and increase the participation of micro, small and medium enterprises that are more constrained but have the potential to grow and supply supermarkets,” ZIPAR states in their report.

On the other hand, ZIPAR has urged Government to promote import substitutes for dynamic products to encourage competitiveness of local products and stimulate local production. It suggests that Government should impose surcharges on imported products that offer the most export potential.
