Lamb’s lettuce prices were high for weeks. “Especially around the periods when we experienced shortages from Southern Europe earlier this year. There were good prices of more than 20 euro per kilogram. We managed to continue supplying from West-Flanders, even though our supply was not very high in January. Prices were good for a long time, but the decrease started a few weeks ago. In the end, lamb’s lettuce is just as volatile a product as all other fresh market products. The price difference with them is about 20 euro, which says it all,” says Ann Beyne from Tomabel.
Quality policy
Ann indicates that Tomabel wants to pursue a strict quality policy. “All cultivators supply under Flandria’s tender. For the top product, we have Tomabel lamb’s lettuce. Tomabel is a cultivator’s association within the REO Veiling, for which quality and service are very important. In West-Flanders, lamb’s lettuce is cultivated for European fresh cutting plants. Lamb’s lettuce is therefore an important product for our region.”
