Vegetable prices soar in France

French consumers are in for a shock if they notice that some products in the fresh fruit and vegetable aisles may have doubled, or even tripled, in price ! Salad prices have more than doubled and courgettes are being sold for €5/kilo instead of €2/kilo. It is not the retailers fault though, the problem comes from the production side.

During this time of year, salad, courgettes and even aubergines, come from South East Spain. However, the region was hit with severe weather conditions in December and January which strongly effected vegetable production.

Consequently, Spanish farmers lost up to 25% of their harvest, which has had a direct increase on prices as the demand is still present. Whilst there is no risk of a vegetable shortage, salad, courgette, aubergine and broccoli prices in France will be higher, which may well discourage consumers.
