Spain: Aldi withdraws below cost strawberry campaign

ALDI Supermarkets has announced the withdrawal of a campaign which consisted in the sale of strawberries from Huelva below the cost of production, as reported by the Andalusian Strawberry Interprofessional Organization (Interfresa), which took legal action against the chain.

ALDI has published on Twitter a message that says: "@Interfresa. We'd like to inform you that ALDI proceeds to the withdrawal of the sale of 500 gram strawberry packs. We apologise for what happened."

Interfresa president José Luis García-Palacios has expressed his satisfaction with the chain's decision and has said that they accept "their apologies and rectification," although he has also urged the chain "to prevent such cases from ever happening again."

Garcia-Palacios has stated that Interfresa will stop its legal actions "once it is clear that the campaign has been actually withdrawn; that is, when we find that the advertising has been withdrawn and that there are no strawberries in supermarkets at that price."

Interfresa had reported the initiation of legal actions against ALDI supermarkets as the sale of strawberries below the cost of production "discredits the image of the products and of the whole sector."
