Obtala completes trial melon harvest in Tanzania

Africa–based forestry and fruit group Obtala Resources has announced the completion of a successful trial run of its first melon harvest in Tanzania. After the harvest the first batch was sent to Kenya by road and ultimately to Dubai by sea.

Repeat orders have subsequently been sent to Nairobi, and the company claims that the quality of the fruit was praised by its customers.

Dubai is the target market and an expansion is being targeted for July and November when sweet melon and water melon is less readily available locally in the Middle East.

Land utilization is planned to expand to around 125 hectares in 2017 compared to the 25 hectares that were planted in 2016. The company hopes by 2018 to cover 500 hectares.

"I am confident 2017 will be a revolutionary year for the company as we move forward into growing markets; well-funded, unencumbered, and with a competent and motivated management team.” Miles Pelham, chairman stated.
