Growers optimistic about Washington apple exports to Cuba

Growers are becoming curious about the future of apples in Cuba, especially the apples originating from Washington state. They are hoping that the death of Fidel Castro could leave the country more open to imports from the United States. This follows ever improving relations between the two countries.

Washington produces 66 percent of total U.S. production according to Washington Policy Center, leaving it far ahead of any other state in the country. David Hovde of Flat Top Ranch in Prescott, a local farmer, believes Cuba could provide another market for Washington's ever growing apple production.

However, until an embargo is lifted by congress, Washington growers must wait and see how president-elect Donald Trump and Castro's death could affect current affairs.
