Armenia has new strategy to advance agriculture

On November 23, Armenia’s minister of agriculture Ignatiy Arakelyan announced that the ministry was embarking on the development of a new strategy to advance the sector. He made the announcement during a meeting with entrepreneurs, who have carried out successful agricultural programs, as well as with logistics, marketing and export specialists.

"We are working out a long-term strategic program, and we need to meet with all interested parties, who can make proposals concerning the development of the sector. We would like to hear also what you expect from the government", - Arakelyan was quoted as saying by the ministry’s press office.

The participants were said to have pointed out the problems impeding the development of agriculture, as well as voiced their proposals for its reform.

They also discussed the production of non-traditional crops, such as artichokes, lentils, peas, corn, etc., export of fresh fruits and vegetables and dried fruits, opening of new markets for local agricultural products and enhancing the competitiveness of Armenian products in international markets.

They also stressed the importance of the development of organic agriculture. Discussed were also logistics and marketing issues, as well as the branding of Armenian products.
