The arrival of Piñatex brings a great alternative to leather: it's 100% natural, biodegradable, animal friendly and is suitable for creating fashion. From bags to shoes to even clothes! Not just a blessing for vegans, but also for animals and the environment. The processing of ordinary leather is very polluting, due to the use of chemicals, and often causes unhealthy work environments in low wage countries. The production of 'pineapple leather' produces 80% less waste than the processing of normal leather.
Byproduct of the pineapple harvest
Piñatex is made of pineapple leaf fibres, a byproduct of the pineapple harvest. No extra land, water or pesticides are needed for its production. The material is naturally strong, sustainable, light and breathable. Farmers in the Philippines take the fibres from the pineapple leaves. The fibres are then processed into workable material in Spain. Piñatex provides extra income for the pineapple farmers.
NAE: No Animal Exploitation
Piñatex's shoes are produced by the Portuguese brand NAE Vegan (No Animal Exploitation). NAE is 100% animal friendly. No animal products are used, instead alternatives such as cork, recycled PET and faux-suede from eco micro fibres is used. Piñatex has now been added to this. Better for people, animals and the environment.
