It is harvesting season for potatoes in Ahlat district of Bitlis, eastern Turkey. One of the country’s main potato producing area, Ahlat, has a dedicated land of 15,000 ha, supplying both local trade and other regions in Turkey.
Growers said they were optimistic, as they expect a yield of 160,000 tons this year, but also a little concerned because the majority saw their crop rot last year, due to low prices. They ask for government support in limiting volumes of potatoes from other regions entering the local market.
