Germany:
Edeka undisputed market leader
There is a high concentration of supermarkets in Germany. Market leader is clearly Edeka, a cooperative of supermarkets, followed at a clear distance by rivals Rewe, the Schwarz Group (Lidl & Kaufland) and both Aldi groups.

With 460 stores, Kaiser’s Tengelmann is a small player in Germany. The Bundeskartellamt, the German independent competition authority, prohibited the takeover of the Kaiser’s Tengelmann stores by Edeka. The minister for economic affairs Sigmar Gabriel tried to allow the takeover with a ministerial permit. However, for the moment, the high regional court in Dusseldorf has decided that this approach couldn’t be allowed.
Now the employees of Kaiser's Tengelmann have to deal with the possibility that the company will be split and sold to several different parties, which most likely will lead to the loss of jobs.
