Apricot producers in Malatya, in the Eastern Anatolian region of Turkey, ask that the government set a minimum price for apricots. The Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock’s recent announcement that compensation will be paid to producers who have suffered losses due to hail and rain, were welcomed, but growers in Malatya are more interested in a price increase. Ahmet Gündüz, a local producer, complained about the 6 Turkish Lira price tag compared to 10 TL in the early nineties “we need to sell them for a minimum price of 15 TL to make a profit”.
A minimum price promise to producers following a meeting with officials in 2015 has not yet been delivered.
