Knifeman blames behaviour on kiwifruit 'overdose'

In August, a man ran down a busy street in Petersborough, England, terrifying passers-by with a knife. He has since blamed his behaviour on hallucinations induced by an overdose of kiwifruit.

Piotr Oleksy, 40, had to be disarmed by two brave members of the public after the incident. Oleksy admitted two counts of possessing a knife in a public place place when he appeared at Peterborough Magistrates' Court.

Oleksy told police he thought he was being chased but officers found no evidence of this.

The animal feed shop worker told the court he had taken a lot of vitamin supplements and eaten half a kilo of kiwi fruit before the bizarre episode last month.

A report from the probation service said: "He (Oleksy) told his doctor he had taken a lot of vitamins, including vitamin C and amino acids supplements, and also half a kilo of kiwi fruit.

He was told an overdose of vitamins could lead to hallucinations."

Oleksy was given a 12-month community order, with 60 hours of unpaid work.
