Apples and tomatoes, the most harvested fresh products in the EU

Eurostat has published the latest data on the EU fruit and vegetable market for the year 2015. In total, in all European Union countries, fruits took a total area of ​​2.3 million hectares, while vegetables were cultivated on about 2.1 million hectares.

The EU country with the largest acreage devoted to fruits and vegetables last year was Spain, with a total of 636 thousand hectares (about 27.1 percent share of the total), followed by Italy, with 420 thousand hectares (20.2 percent share).

The most harvested fruit in the European Union was apples, with a total of 12,685 million tonnes, while for vegetables the ranking is topped by tomatoes, with a total of 17,654 million tonnes harvested last year.

In 2015, the three largest EU producers of apples were Poland, Italy and France (in this order). In the case of tomatoes, the largest producers were Italy, Spain and Portugal.
