Rick Mengers, ZON:
“Supply asparagus now erupting, market well balanced”
The relatively cold weather caused the supply of asparagus to be low for a long time. “Because of the small volumes and the usual action pressure there were very high prices in day trading last week. Supply actually starts to get going now, but due to good demand I expect demand and supply to remain balanced,” asparagus seller Rick Mengers of ZON says.

“Last week we still had good demand from Germany, because they still had too few asparagus. Germany is now getting their own asparagus going, which means we will lose that market. We will see that in the prices, even though they are still prices everyone can live with,” Mengers observes. “In addition, because of the lower prices, other export markets, such as Spain, France, the Czech Republic and Switzerland, are increasingly entering the picture.”
“All in all we have had a very good season with good prices up till now. Especially growers with small tunnels have done well this year. We personally sold more kilograms than last year again. The Dutch supermarkets have once again staked their money on Dutch asparagus. The supply of green asparagus is now also starting.”
