AU: Subway drops pineapple add-on
Pineapple is being dropped from food chain Subway's menu, as a spokesperson says it simple wasn't popular enough to cement a regular spot alongside other ingredients. Subway included pineapple on its menu as a 2015/2016 summer promotion.
The fruit was introduced under the slogan of "Low in fat; high in yum", and encouraged its use in such sandwiches as a chicken teriyaki with pineapple, or a ham with pineapple combination.
While some stores are still selling it, pineapple has officially been retired.
The spokesperson said there were no immediate plans to bring pineapple back, and that something had to prove "pretty popular" to be given regular status.
Other products such as avocado and baby spinach have successfully made the transition from trial items to permanent products.
Subway has also introduced beetroot in recent years.
While details were not given, it was confirmed that the restaurants used both Australian and imported preserved pineapple.
The spokesperson said all of the restaurant's fresh produce is sourced from Australia.
Subway is the fourth largest buyer of fresh produce in Australia after the major supermarkets.
Newly elected chairman of Australian Pineapples, Stephen Pace said while he hadn't seen the pineapple in Subway himself, anything that promoted the fruit was "a brilliant thing".
He said he wouldn't rule out pineapple becoming more of a fast food item in the future.
Mr Pace said the pineapple trend went beyond just eating habits with the fruit currently featuring heavily on clothing, giftware and homeware.
