Recently, Bulgaria refused 22 tons of apples and more than 1 ton of vegetables which were produced in Macedonia and Greece.
The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BABH) has started to carry out thorough inspections of fruit and vegetables imported into the country. The purpose of the inspections is reported to be to prevent the import of poor-quality fruit and vegetables into Bulgaria.
The 22 tons of Macedonia apples recently rejected by BABH were done so on the grounds that the shipment's country of origin was unknown.
On the border with Greece, 800 kg of tomatoes and 360 kg of cucumbers were held over problems with quality.
This has led to several Greek media sources reporting that Bulgaria has started a fruit and vegetable war with its neighbours.
