Argentina: Jujuy to strengthen controls on citrus

"We have talked about strengthening the checkpoints against the entrance of citrus that is infected or that can bring an infection to our province because we must protect our production. In that sense, we have agreed on a course of action to follow," said minister Juan Carlos Abud Robles.

The meeting served to inform local officials about the tasks performed by Afinoa in the province. According to the minister, people were "concerned about the protection of our citrus production, one of the activities that we want to promote, strengthen, and increase because of the great potential it has in Jujuy."

In addition, they discussed issues relating to controls in the transport of these products and they agreed on a working agenda to coordinate actions to enhance production.

In turn, the technical manager of Afinoa, Gloria Perez, said the meeting had been very positive and that they would be able to continue making joint efforts to address the problems and adversities that the citrus sector faces, such as the Huanglongbing or yellow disease outbreak.

She also said that they would strengthen and optimize controls at the province's outposts, "because we need them to be efficient so as to monitor the movement of fruit and citrus propagation equipment for the benefit of the citrus production and to strengthen the region."

An agenda was established and the next meeting was scheduled for February 17 in Buenos Aires.
