Strengthens wholesale business

Metro Group acquires Rungis express

With the acquisition of the premium foods supplier
Rungis express, Metro Group is extending the
delivery business of its Metro Cash & Carry
wholesale operations. Subject to approval by the
responsible antitrust authorities and supervisory
bodies, the Düsseldorf-based retail group will
acquire the German and international business of Rungis express with headquarters in Meckenheim as well as the corresponding logistics and service activities. With this investment, Metro Group once again underscores its repositioning as a multi-channel retail company that purposefully combines its online and offline business.

Rungis express is a leading company in the field of food service distribution, i.e. the direct delivery of premium foods to customers from the hotel, restaurant and catering (HoReCa) sector. The company forms part of the Cool Chain Group, which operates various trading and logistics entities. The brand and the independence of Rungis express will be retained also after the takeover. Also covered by the transaction are the activities of Rungis express in Austria, Poland, Portugal, Switzerland and Spain as well as its logistics activities, the retail business (cc delivery) and its headquarters in Germany. This acquisition will complement the existing food distribution activities of Metro Cash & Carry with special expertise and know-how in the FSD segment. The parties agreed not to disclose the value of the transaction.

“The acquisition of Rungis express represents an important step for METRO Cash & Carry on its way towards becoming the leading multi-channel food service provider in Germany“, says Pieter C. Boone, Member of the Management Board of Metro AG and CEO of Metro Cash & Carry. “This collaboration will enable us to drive our expansion in this field in Germany and to further expand our existing food service distribution concept. By combining the strengths of both partners, we are developing Metro Cash & Carry Germany into an increasingly important partner and service provider for numerous customers from the hospitality sector who expect competent delivery and advice from a modern wholesale company.“
