Mexico: Persian lime prices on the rise

Lime prices in the Mexican state of Yucatan have started registering quick increases; the premium quality stands at 90 pesos and the second class at 60 pesos. But the crop with the best prices is currently pumpkins, which are sold for 200 pesos per box.

Producers who are specifically devoted to the cultivation of limes in the southern parts of the state (approximately 3,000 growers) are now in an excellent position. During these early days of 2016, prices have increased by up to 50% compared to last year, which closed with limes at 40 pesos.

Two weeks ago, prices started to improve, reaching 70 pesos, and on Friday afternoon the premium box reached up to 90 pesos.

According to the producer Eleazar Reyes Cabrera, limes have been in good demand for the past decade, with good prices in the first three months of the year, thus making it possible to recover the expenses made in preparation for the times of drought.

Because of its scarcity, prospects point to a record price of 800 pesos per 20 kilo box being reached in 2016; a level that was already reached in 2014.

Position
In 2016, growers in southern Yucatan may be the main lime suppliers. In times of shortage, they handle about 800 boxes per day.

Export
At this time, Yucatan's limes are marketed in the Midwest and a part of them goes also to the United States.
