Group set 2016 online sales target at €2.8 million

China Qifeng Fruit launches e-commerce strategy

“Qifeng Fruit is a fruit cooperative from the province of Shaanxi in the centre of China. The cooperative was founded in 2008. We work together with local farmers, for which we receive financial support from the government,” says Xiaogang Ren, international trade manager of Shaanxi Qifeng Fruit.

Our own plant base occupies 100 hectares (1,500 mu). We have a cold storage facility of 4 hectares. Our main fruit is kiwi, which we plant in open fields. The air in Shaanxi in clean and weather conditions are good. The kiwi season starts in August and ends in May the following year. 70% to 80% of our products are sold in China. We supply 12 wholesale markets directly and have shops in Shanghai, Beijing and Xi'an. The remaining 20% to 30% we export to Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand and Russia”.

“Last year's sales performance has not been great. This is due to the global recession. The quality of our kiwis has remained the same. In the future we want to enforce the sales structure we have now. We would like to increase export, but overseas competition is tough and we do not have sufficient international staff to achieve this.”

In the past years, e-commerce has taken off in China. An increasing number of fruit growers are selling their products through the internet. Shaanxi Qifeng Fruit is also to boost an online sales channel. “Three years ago, we embarked on internet sales. Our online business has been steadily growing. In 2015, we sold for a couple of million Yuan online. Our online sales target for 2016 is 20 million Yuan (€2.8 million). Compared to our competitors, we use little antistaling agents. We keep the kiwis in our cold storage centres and deliver them from there to the end customer directly. Our logistics team is able to deliver fresh kiwis quickly. This is one of our biggest advantages.”

“In 2016 we will roll out a programme to inform our farmers about the market. We want to implement an standardised plantation process”.

In past years, e-commerce has been very popular in China, more and more fruit producers start to sell their products via the internet, Shaanxi Qifeng Fruit Co., Ltd is one of them. “For the last three years, in addition to selling our fruits in the traditional way, we also sell them through our online shop. Our online business has grown, in 2015, we sold a few millions Yuan worth of our fruit online. Our online sale target for the coming two years is 20 million Yuan (€2.8 million). Compared to our competitors, we hardly use antistaling agents, instead, we store them properly in our cool storage center, so that when an order is received from our online shop, our logistics team is able to deliver fresh kiwis within a short period. I think this is one of our biggest advantages.”

“In 2016, we will provide more relevant training programmes to our farmers to make sure they understand the market and that all the plantation processes take place in a standardized way.
