Chile about to expand on Taiwanese blueberry market

The prospects for Chilean blueberry export to Taiwan are enormous. There are three main causes for this opportunity.

First of all, Taiwan has a large mountain area and has therefore limited agricultural production. For this reason the country relies mainly on food import, 40% of the food in Taiwan is imported. Secondly, Taiwan costumers are starting to attach great importance to the source and quality of their food to lower health risks. Finally, the service economy has started leading in Taiwan.
Over the past five years, the consumption of berries in Taiwan has grown more than substantially. The blueberry consumption grew by 360%. Taiwanese love fresh fruit, the fresh fruit consumption per capita reached 132 kg. This makes Taiwan the largest fresh fruit consumer in Asia.

"Chile has already become Taiwan's third largest fresh fruit exporter, after the United States and New Zealand." Rose Marie Bedecarratz, director of the Chilean Foreign Ministry of Foreign Trade and Investment Promotion Institute Taiwan Office, explains: "For Chile, as a berry producing country and especially as a blueberry exporting country, the promotion of berries is both an opportunity as it is a kind of demand. We want to introduce Chilean blueberries to the ordinary households."
