Tonnie Hooijmans, Oké Trading:

"Shortage of chestnut and oyster mushrooms"

The past weeks, the mushroom market has done better than last year. "Only this week, sales of white mushrooms are lagging behind a bit, and the chestnut mushrooms and oyster mushrooms are scarce," says Tonnie Hooijmans of Oké Trading from Velddriel. "Supplies are going as planned, and will increase in the coming weeks."

Prices for white mushrooms are around 1.50 Euro at the moment. "Normal prices," Tonnie says. "For sales, we mostly depend on the domestic market and the United Kingdom, supplemented with some export to Germany and France. We are slowly losing our export position on the Scandinavian market, those countries are mostly supplied to directly from Poland now."

"The Dutch export of preserves has been under pressure for a while longer, but we won't make up for that loss with the fresh mushrooms. The Netherlands used to be market leader, but these days Polish production is twice as big, and British and German productions are also on the rise. Our role has been relegated to filling gaps on the export markets, we have to live with that," Tonnie concludes. "But I'm not pessimistic, traditionally there will be autumn promotions in the coming weeks again, and we will gladly meet that demand."
