McDonald's opens luxury pop-up in Tokyo

In a bid to boost its image in Japan, McDonald's is ditching its hallmark fast food and disposable cups for fine dining, posh silverware and real crockery.

Luxury pop-up, Restaurant M, will open in Roppongi Hills in Tokyo on July 27 for just one night, offering diners a multi-course meal that includes a vichyssoise soup made from French fries and a gelée made with McDonald’s vegetables.

Instead of the usual paper cups and cartons, diners will be treated to ceramic plates, silver cutlery, ice tea in wine glasses and coffee served in a cup and saucer.

And rather than grabbing a quarter pounder on the run, Restaurant M will provide smartly dressed tables to leisurely dine at, complete with stylish menus and real napkins rather than paper serviettes.

When it comes to the food, McDonald's fans needn't worry: Burgers and fries are still very much on the menu - albeit with a fine dining twist.

Starter: Vichyssoise Mac fries accompanied by a salad; vegetables used on the Fresh Mac (lettuce, tomato, cabbage among them) encased in jelly.

Beef, chicken and fish patties are also available with a variety of McDonald’s dipping sauces.

Main: A full-size Fresh Mac burger in any of the three protein varieties. Ice tea in a wine glass.

Dessert: An Oreo McFlurry with berries, served in a bowl, of course. Coffee.
