Port of Antwerp participates in railway to duisport

The Port of Antwerp and duisport strengthen their cooperation. The port of Antwerp participates in the rail shuttle, which connects the two ports. The duisport Group started the direct rail connection from Duisburg to Antwerp under difficult conditions in 2006. The commitment of the port of Antwerp to the shuttle emphasizes the desire to further develop this important European logistic corridor.

Since the beginning of this year duisport agency (DPA) offers a daily direct train from a pier in Antwerp to Duisburg. A railway company offered this service together with DPA until the end of last year the rail shuttle Antwerp-Duisburg. But at the end of last year railway company decided to discontinue its services. The Port of Antwerp has decided to join the service for a period of five years, to emphasize the strategic importance of a frequent and reliable connection to Duisburg. This way the port is accessible from a large region.

"The participation of the Port of Antwerp to the rail link makes trains more reliable and strengthens the role of duisport as the leading logistics hub in Central Europe," according to Erich Staake, CEO of Duisburger Hafen AG.

Antwerp and Duisburg as long-term partners
The Ports of Antwerp and Duisburg are working closely together with the intention to develop the link between their regions. Duisburg and Antwerp have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in 1999, which was renewed and extended in 2013. Duisport is the central hub, where goods will converge and are redistributed into Europe. A reliable rail connection to the port of Antwerp is essential for the further expansion of the hub function. Last year, nearly 200 million metric tons of goods were handled at the port of Antwerp, much of it destined for North Rhine-Westphalia.

The rail shuttle provides a daily connection between the Deurganck-Dock in Antwerp and logport I in Duisburg, ensuring a connection between the two regions. "The transfer of goods to the Deurganck-Dock, which has a very high container density, clearly shows the importance of a guaranteed, complete, fast and efficient handling of freight flows," says Marc Van Peel, president of the Port of Antwerp Authority.

Railway to the port of Antwerp also offers direct connections to other important destinations in Europe, such as Ludwigshafen, Vienna and Budapest.
