Former Chiquita CEO buys minor-league baseball team

Former Chiquita Brands International Inc. CEO Fernando Aguirre is the proud new owner of the Erie SeaWolves, a AA baseball franchise in Pennsylvania.

The deal was announced Friday morning in Erie. I reached Aguirre while he was driving to Pittsburgh to catch a flight home to Charlotte.

“I’ve been studying this for over a year,” he told me.

Aguirre already owns pieces of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans and the Cincinnati Reds.

“For now, that’s going to be it,” he says of his deal for the Erie team.

Aguirre is now the sole owner of the SeaWolves, which will allow him to take a more active interest in the team than he enjoys with the Pelicans and Reds.

“There’s nothing like owning one of your own to get involved in the day-to-day activities of the team,” he says.

Aguirre left Chiquita in 2012 as the company struggled after moving to Charlotte from Cincinnati. The Cutrale and Safra groups now own Chiquita.
