As of 1 December, Peruvian Tahiti lime exports will have easier access to China after the modification of the cooling requirements approved by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of China (AQSIQ).
This was announced by the Peruvian Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Magali Silva, who recalled that China has become one of the main markets for Peru's agricultural products, mainly fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as seafood.
"China forced Peruvian limes to undergo a cold treatment after reaching its market, but this procedure resulted in the fruit not being able to stay for long on the shelves," he stated.
This situation, according to the Minister, made the Peruvian product less competitive compared to those of other countries.
"In the case of limes, China's main supplier is the United States, followed by the African countries, then Germany, New Zealand, Haiti, Australia, Cyprus and other Asian countries like Taiwan, Thailand and Japan," he said.
In the ranking of Peru's most exported agricultural products, limes can be found between the 50th and 60th position. From January to September 2014 shipments totalled 1.5 million dollars.
