Several circumstances have resulted in optimistic prospects for the mandarin campaign. The provinces of Huelva and Cadiz have kicked off the harvest season between 7 and 10 days earlier than last year, according to the report of Andalusia's Prices and Markets Observatory.
The quality and calibre of the first batches in both provinces are better than in the 2013/2014 campaign, which is resulting in higher prices than those recorded a year ago, with the kilo reaching 0.75 Euro, compared to 0.47 Euro in 2013.
Andalusian mandarins have also sparked "significant interest" from operators in eastern Spain due to weather setbacks in that part of the country, which have reduced the fruit's quality and production volumes. A hailstorm in eastern Spain in September caused serious damages.
The harvest for mandarins of the Oronules and Clemenrubi varieties is in full swing in Huelva; the earliest areas have almost finished and the first batches of Satsuma are being harvested in Cadiz.
