Ukraine: Fruit price increased by 60%

According to official statistics, in September all groups of products (except vegetables) in Ukraine have seen a rise in price. However, the decrease in the price of vegetables by 0.3% in high season can hardly be called a fall in prices.

Within just one month the products in Ukraine are reported to grow in price by 3% and since the beginning of the year - by 15.5%. The most significant growth in the period from January to September is marked in the price of fruit (+ 62.7%).

Fruit is gradually becoming unaffordable for the average buyers. The reason is the dollar’s rate that affects the prices of imported fruit. As a result, citrus fruit costs 1.8-1.9 USD/kg, grapes – 2 USD/kg, kiwi - a minimum of 3.5 USD. Vendors have to give up on exotic fruit and stick to seasonal local fruit, which have jumped in price as well due to the increased cost of fuel. Apples are sold for a minimum of 0.7 USD per kilo, and more expensive varieties - for 1.2 USD.

It is to note that fruit is the first product the citizens of Kiev start to save on. If they used to purchase 1-2 kilos of apples, bananas or grapes, now they buy only half a kilo, just for kids.
