Russian scientists cloned potato in a test tube

Scientists from Siberian Research Institute of Agriculture have developed a new direction in potato breeding. Several test tubes with baby-plants grown from potato embryos were received from Ural scientists. These are samples of varieties “Kamensky”, “Gornyak” and “Amur”, - said Sergey Krasnikov, scientist and potato breeder from Siberian Research Institute of Agriculture.

The mini-plants have a thin stalk with a pair of leaves, and are currently growing in large pots with conventional soil. Soon, the little tubers should be formed, and in the spring they will be planted in the open ground, - explained the scientist.

In order to grow healthy plants, the cultivation of samples takes place in a sterile environment.

The principle of potato microcloning is based on grafting. New plants grown from test-tube samples will be virus-free and secure from reinfection.
