The General Director of Syria's General Establishment for storage, and marketing, Hassan Makhlouf, said that the entity plans to purchase about 100,000 tonnes of citrus fruits directly from growers, hoping to increase the volume depending on the circumstances.
He explained that the institution will start buying from smallholders, pointing out that the initiative cannot be completed until overseas markets are found to be able to export the surpluses.
This season's citrus production in the coastal area is estimated to reach 817,449 tonnes in Latakia and up to 228,000 tonnes in Tartus, leading to bottlenecks in its marketing.
