Czech president criticises predominance of foreign retailers

The Czech President Miloš Zeman criticised the predominance of foreign retail chains on the Czech market. He believes that "their profits are too high, and on top of that, they do not seek to promote sales of domestic producers." The Czech, according to the president, "should follow the example of other countries where domestic chains and goods prevail. Czech residents would consequently also buy more Czech food products," said Zeman at the opening of Agrosalon Bread Basket in Czech Budejovice.

"It is not fair to just criticise, so I suggest that the Agricultural and Food Chamber, in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, extend their relationship with the only national chain, which is called COOP," said the head of state.

The president of the Agricultural Chamber, Miroslav Toman, also appealed to consumers to favour Czech food over imports. "Let me call the Department of Agriculture and the Government of the Czech Republic so that controls are tightened on the import goods, not only in terms of quality but also in prices to avoid dumping. I also urge the Minister and the government to fight for compensations for Czech growers and processors," said Toman, referring to the Russian sanctions directed against European growers and producers.

Jurečka: This year's harvest will be a record
The opening of the Agrosalon in the South Bohemian metropolis also counted with the participation of the Minister of Agriculture, Marian Jurečka (KDU-CSL). He expects that this marketing year will be unique for growers. It is already clear that the revenue of cereal growers will reach record levels. Some of the results presented by Jurečka give him hope that domestic agriculture is expanding.

The development of the sector will also be aided with European grants - small, medium and large growers and food producers may receive a total of 84 billion under the Rural Renewal Programme from 2014 to 2020.
