Philippines: Garlic prices finally decrease with rise in supply

Prices of garlic have finally gone down based on the price monitoring conducted by the Philippine Statistics Authority-Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (PSA-BAS) 11 last week.

The price of native garlic went down to P230 to P240 as of Friday last week compared to the July 11 price of P280 to P300. (P1= $0.023 USD)

The price of imported garlic also went down from P280 to P300 to P190 to P230 while that of Hawaiian garlic decreased to P140 to P160 from P160 to P180.

PSA-BAS 11 market reporter Imelda V. Abdala, in a phone interview with Sun.Star Davao, said the decrease in the prices of garlic was due to the increase in the supply in the local market. She said the increase in supply of imported garlic, in particular, has helped pull down the price of native garlic. She assured consumers that there has been a steady decrease in the prices of garlic with an increase in the supply.

A decrease in the prices of other selected agricultural products have also been observed, such as ampalaya from P45 to P55 to P40 to P50, white potato P70 to P80 to P65 to P75, and native pechay from P60 to P70 to P50 to P60.

But PSA-BAS 11's price monitoring also showed an increase in the prices of the following products: tomato from P25 to P30 to P32 to P38, red onion from P60 to P70 to P70 to P80, and carabao mango from P40 to P50 to P60 to P65.

Price of selected fruits and vegetable products are: string beans P25 to P30, cabbage P40 to P50, carrots P50 to P60, habitchuelas P30 to P40, eggplant P25 to P30, lakatan P36 to P38, latundan P26 to P28, calamansi P20 to P30, and papaya P18 to P20.
