Carrefour anticipates fruit and vegetable crisis

Since the 4th July Carrefour has been promoting seasonal fruit and vegetables, an intelligent way to get ahead before a crisis threatens to arise. ''The exceptional weather conditions in 2014 favoured the production of summer fruit and vegetables. Volume is 30% higher than that of previous years and their is a risk of a price collapse'' says Carrefour.

The aim is to boost consumption as well as well as partner together with the producers. Over the 4-5th July, 80 Carrefour hypermarkets will organise sales of fruit and vegetables in large packages. According to Carrefour, this operation could lead to an additional 200 tons of fruit and vegetables being sold in 2 days.
Throughout the summer crates of peaches, nectarines, tomatoes and melons will be displayed in the centre aisles of supermarkets.

Bruno Darnaus, President of the AOP French peaches and nectarines rejoices that ''this operation led by Carrefour shows a great interest in the profession, as it takes into account our commercial needs''. ''We hope that the melon sector will rediscover a dynamic market price thanks to a significant rise in sales that such an operation will generate. The Carrefour company and the melon Interprofession have all to win in this communal project'' concludes Bernard Chiron and Bernard Borredon, co-Presidents of the Interprofessional melon association.
