US: Safeway to sell shopping centres?

Safeway has reportedly decided to sell its shopping centre business, in a move that could help it reap up to $1bn. According to the Financial Times, the grocery giant has hired Eastdil Secured to find buyers and is calling for bids to be submitted in July itself.

While Safeway has not commented on the deal, any such move would be in keeping with Safeway’s programme of selling off assets following its sale to Albertsons. The group is also believed to be working on plans to sell its Mexican operations.

The FT noted that it was unclear if any bids had been received by Safeway, and its sources noted that any sale could be several weeks away.
