Alant becomes 2014 Swiss fruit variety of the year
The apple variety is the Swiss fruit variety of the year 2014, the Swiss newspaper 'Blick' reports on its website. The, around 100 years old, apple variety is very resistant against the bacterial infection blight and shows no large susceptibility to the worst global fungal disease scurvy. The variety is originally from Gondiswil in canton Bern
Alant was named the fruit variety of the year by Fructus, the Swiss union of the protection of old fruit varieties, last Thursday. By naming the variety of the year Fructus hopes to help prevent rare and old fruit varieties that are resistant again diseases from disappearing, and help them be cultivated more. Alant is a good quality hand apple. It has already been crossed with other apple varieties in the hope that it will pass on its good qualities, mainly its resistance against blight, on to the next generation.
The breeding of the Alant variety by Fructus is supported financially by IP-Suisse and Migros/Terra Suisse to promote biodiversity within fruit cultivation.
