Spain: Almeria growers afraid to plant melons and watermelons

According to sources from Andalusia's Council of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development, the threat of a possible spread of the New Delhi virus is leading many of Almeria's growers to consider extending the cycle of their early cucumber and tomato plantations, instead of starting with a second melon and watermelon cycle.

The losses caused by this disease in courgette plantations, and the ease of spread to fruit and vegetables of the gourd family, like melon and watermelon, have been a source of uncertainty amongst producers. Many are likely to introduce a second aubergine or tomato cycle after the current tomato and cucumber cycles are over, taking a chance to observe how (and if) the viral disease affects the earliest melon and watermelon transplants.
