Citrus Australia: New ministry will be good for citrus market

Citrus Australia has welcomed the announcement of the incoming Coalition Government’s first Ministry. The nation’s peak citrus body congratulated Nationals Leader, Warren Truss, who is Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development; Barnaby Joyce, Agriculture Minister; Richard Colbeck, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Agriculture; and Andrew Robb, Minister for Trade and Investment.

The Australian citrus industry represents the largest volume fresh fruit export, with a value of $194 million in 2012/13. This years’ export season has not yet completed and is already tracking 10 per cent above last year.

Ms Damiani said a lower dollar and strong demand from Japan and China in particular are driving the growth, but government support is required to ensure this growth continued. “Quarantine and trade barriers still exist in these and other promising markets so improved market access and trade agreements will be critical in realising the Asian century. We should also welcome foreign investment once it has passed the national interest test.”

Ms Damiani urged the Opposition and Senate to respect the mandate given to the incoming Australian Government. “Cutting red tape and scrapping the carbon tax will improve the competitiveness of Australian business.”
